As part of Holocaust Memorial Day, I signed a Book of Commitment as a mark of respect for those that died in the Holocaust. Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates all communities who suffered as a result of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and illustrates why the Holocaust is relevant to everyone in the UK today. Through national events and local activities, the day provides a focal point for people to reflect on the continuing repercussions of the Holocaust as well as more recent genocides around the world. Holocaust Memorial Day is officially commemorated in the UK on 27th January – the day Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp and the site of the largest mass murder in history, was liberated. This year’s Memorial Day marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and in the weeks running up to the day the Holocaust Educational Trust will be running events up and down the country to commemorate those who died in the Holocaust.
The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is Speak Up, Speak Out, which encourages all of us to speak out against hatred wherever we encounter it. We each have a voice, and each of us must use that voice to speak up and speak out against injustice wherever we see it. To find out more about these events, please visit www.het.org.uk. I hope we will all take a moment to consider how easily words can escalate into discrimination and violence – and recommit ourselves to challenging prejudice, whatever form it might take. I encourage everyone to sign the pledge online to ‘speak up, speak out’ against prejudice and discrimination in all its forms at www.speakupnow.org.uk/ . You can also follow them on Twitter: @HolocaustUK. By making sure that we remember those who died in the Holocaust, and by pledging to speak up and speak out against hatred, we can make sure that nothing like the Holocaust ever happens again.
