This week marks the start of the fifth annual National Apprenticeship Week.

I will be showing my continued support by meeting with educational institutions and businesses around Scunthorpe to learn about their apprenticeships.

I am a big supporter of apprenticeships to give people crucial work experience and better equip them for future prospects.

Craig Busby

National Apprenticeship Week 2012

This is a Labour initiative set up to showcase apprenticeships to young people as part of our commitment to their futures. The event has been a historic success since its inception, last year alone more than 500 activities took place throughout the country calling attention to the rewarding programmes and the benefits they provide young adults and employers alike.

On Monday 14th February I will be visiting two apprentices doing a Business and Administration Apprenticeship at North Lindsey College. Later that day, I will be making a similar stop at Halfords Autocentre to see their programme in action.  Finally, on 2nd March, I am going to the local McDonalds to discuss further apprenticeship opportunities with the franchise for young people in Scunthorpe.

Apprenticeships are good for the economy

– they facilitate an environment for the individual and the employer to benefit from one another. The programmes bring hard-working, passionate people into an organisation who can provide measurable results. On the other hand, it also shows a commitment from businesses, indicating they are the kind of firm that invests in its people in order to achieve long-term success.

It is important we encourage apprenticeships and seize every opportunity to give our young people the chance to learn new skills; both in the classroom and on the job.

My own apprentice, Craig Busby joined us in September last year having won through a very strong field of over 160 candidates for the Apprenticeship position in my constituency office. He has settled in very well, bringing his own ideas and experiences to the team. We are all enjoying witnessing the remarkable progress he is making/has made in such a short time. He said just the other day he felt like he’d been here years, not sure if that’s a compliment!

Craig keeps his own blog which you can read here http://craigbusbyapprentice.wordpress.com/
