A week of recess provided an opportunity to catch up on work in the constituency. I had meetings with both the council and Keep Scunthorpe Alive to discuss ways of them working together to develop Scunthorpe Town Centre whatever happens to the planning application for a retail park next to Glanford Park. . I also met with the Council’s Tourism Officer to be updated on how the area is being developed as a tourist attraction. For those of us that live here that might sound strange; familiarity means we don’t necessarily recognise the area’s attractions to others! But as an outdoor destination, visitor numbers are growing significantly. It’s a great place for wildlife watching and playing golf among other things. I found time for a circular walk from Redbourne towards Waddingham; then enjoying a pub lunch at the Red Lion.
And Tuesday night saw the first home win of 2012 for the Iron with a world class goal from Gary Thompson. Followed up by an excellent away win at Orient. Perhaps we can begin to hope that Scunthorpe will stay in League One this year despite a difficult season?
It was good to join Calvin Lee for the start of his Photography Club held at the Priory Hotel – Simon Spavin was there to demonstrate the skills and joys of wildlife photography. His photos were awesome: many taken locally – another reminder of the beauty of where we live.
I also had a really positive meeting with Humberside Police Federation members in Scunthorpe. They do a great job for us locally helping keep us safe and secure. They were able to spell out their concerns that the government’s massive cuts in police spending will damage policing. This in the week that John Prescott announced he was putting himself forward for the job of Humberside Police Commissioner. At least he recognises that the Conservatives are wasting millions of pounds on these unwanted elections! Money that could be better spent on the front line!
On the back of National Apprenticeship week I met with apprentices at North Lindsey College and visited the Halfords Garage on Doncaster Road to speak to a really keen young apprentice learning great technical skills in the workshop.
