GAIA - GO TO MY BLOG

LAWRENCE - GO TO MY BLOG

I’m a Year 11 student at Queen Elizabeth High School, Gainsborough, and I have a great interest in politics, from local issues to national affairs.

I study several GCSE subjects including History and I also take AS Levels in Classical Civilisation and Critical Thinking. I have several hobbies such as music, drama, reading – and of course politics!

I first became interested in politics several years ago, and since then have been trying to get myself involved, beginning with being on the student council at my school, and now coming on work experience at Nic Dakin’s office.

Since the general election last year, I have become increasingly concerned about the state of the country and particularly worried about the future for young people.

The actions taken by the coalition government have only confirmed my views that Labour really is the only party worth supporting – Nic (and other Labour MPs) are the only hope for the future!

I shall use my blog to write about my feelings and opinions on current affairs. Hope you enjoy reading it!!

I am a student at John Leggott College studying English Literature, Politics, Sociology, and Media. And yes, Media is a subject!

I am an intern in Nic’s office. I started in October 2010 on work experience and they couldn’t get rid of me! They did try though!

I come to the office every Wednesday and Friday fitting it around college. I have my own desk and chair and enjoy the delights of office work.

I am only 17 and have the joy of paying adult fare for everything which isn’t fun. “Just because I’m in a suit doesn’t mean I can’t be 15, Mr Train Conductor!”

I don’t like Channel 4 News. I do, however, like collecting train tickets. I have 65. I am overusing the exclamation mark and enjoy a white coffee with 2 sugars. Welcome to my life.

Hi, I’m Craig, the latest addition to Nic’s office as a modern business administration apprentice. I am 20 something and I’m a member of Bottesford Town Council.

I am really excited about the opportunity I have been given and I can’t wait to get stuck into the job. It will take me out of my comfort zone but I am looking forward to it.

I intend to update my blog regularly with what I have been up to in the office as well as my take on some of the things that are happening in the world.

CRAIG - GO TO MY BLOG

I’m Jack. I’m from Darlington in the wonderful North East of England. I went to school and sixth form in Darlington, and then went to Leeds University where I studied History. Most people usually find it interesting that I’m also a triplet, and now, I’m Nic Dakin’s Parliamentary Assistant. I joined Nic’s team in October 2011 after completing my Masters degree in US history on the civil rights movement and student protest movements, which I also completed at Leeds University. Before working for Nic, I worked part time in my local constituency office for Jenny Chapman MP for Darlington, who I continue to work for part-time for in Westminster.

I’m lucky to get chance to have a go at writing speeches, preparing briefings for debates, helping arrange meetings, writing to the occasional minister, or suggesting PQs to submit, there are plenty of other things to keep me busy.  I enjoy going to gigs with my friends, going to protests, getting curries on Brick Lane, music, films, reading history and economics, surfing, and when I get the chance (and the money) going snowboarding.  And, like so many other Parliamentary Assistants, drinks down the pub and ranting about what the world should be like.

This is my space to tell you all about what I do, what I think, and tell you a little bit about my day-to-day work in the Houses of Parliament.

JACK - GO TO MY BLOG

I’m Zach. I’m a 21 year-old intern from the United States in a town not too far outside of Chicago. Back home, I’m studying in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. I joined Nic and Jack in Parliament as part of a work/study exchange program in London.

I’m hugely excited for the opportunity to work alongside British law makers and have thoroughly enjoyed my responsibilities helping around the office so far. My experiences abroad in the UK have been quite eye-opening and I find myself learning from the culture and people every day. That is not to say things so far have always gone smoothly, as our differences in vernacular, unit measurements, and everyday social behaviour has put me in some humorous situations.

In my free time I enjoy playing and watching sports with friends, seeing movies, going to concerts, and recently I have been rather interested in visiting pubs as such fantastic establishments seldom exist in America. Also, I am into current events and politics and this interest is what inspired me to come across the pond and work in Parliament.

I will use this space to share what it is like working in the House of Commons in addition to my experiences as a foreign student in Europe.

Along the way you may realise a few differences in the terminology I use or the way I spell words. I apologise in advance for this, although I will let you in on a little known fact: The sport we call “soccer” was coined by a British man and the first recorded use of the word was said to precede that of “football”.

Cheers.
