Scunthorpe General Hospital A&E and Maternity services

The Clinical Commissioning group for North Lincolnshire (CCG) says it has "made no plans" to downgrade the A&E service but admits urgent care is being reviewed because of the pressure on the service.

Seeking to allay the fears of local people the CCG has said it “understands people can become very concerned when they read speculation about the future of services and we would like to reassure people that no changes will be made as a result of the sustainable services programme without full discussion and consultation with them first."

However, in spite of the talk about sustainable services and centralised specialist services being better for patients, the changes are primarily about money and, thanks to the Tory government’s meddling in the NHS, there are not enough resources and appropriately trained staff in the NHS to maintain the local services we want and need.

Under consideration is the moving of critical care, the trauma unit, major surgery and the treatment of mental health acute inpatients out of the area with the maternity services becoming midwife-led and complicated births having to be dealt with elsewhere.

The CCG is in a difficult position and we must bear in mind that the vast majority of GPs and health professionals were against the imposition of CCGs by the Tory government. They are “between a rock and a hard place” in having to manage a budget that can’t realistically cope with the expectations and needs of those it is trying to serve.
