Work experience

volunteers.jpgI am a firm believer that work experience provides an invaluable ‘hands-on’ opportunity for young people to gain insight and understanding into the world of work. Giving them the chance to gain knowledge, experience and skills from a professional working environment encourages, inspires and develops their confidence and workplace relationship skills.

In my office it can involve a young person carrying out a particular task, a range of duties or shadowing me or one of my team. Amongst other things, the tasks may involve writing letters and articles, working on my website, desktop publishing or doing a project around their own views on a particular current issue.

I hope this experience enhances the perceptions of young people and emphasises how important learning is to succeed in the workplace. It also provides a great starting point in building a CV.

Over the last 5 years more than 30 young people from the constituency have been given this opportunity in my offices in Scunthorpe and in Westminster.  You can read about the experiences of some of them on the “Get involved” - “Young people” pages of my website.

If you would like to have a chat about doing work experience in my office, you can contact my office manager, Lorraine, on 01724 842000.
